This site is situated directly adjacent to Beckenham Hill Station. The approved scheme of 8 flatted dwellings replaced an existing bungalow on site. The planning success resulted in the site being sold with planning permission and Thomas Alexander were retained as the Project Architect to deliver the scheme during the technical design and construction phases.
The proposal cleverly manipulated the perceived massing of the development by splitting the flat building into three brick forms split by a glazed core. This approach allows the scheme to present a domestic scale to the existing neighbouring housing but grows in prominence where the scheme faces the station.
The brick forms present a contemporary take on the neighbouring traditional mansard blocks by reducing the eaves height at sensitive areas at the neighbouring boundaries.
The project was shortlisted for a national brick award in 2021.
